Bohemian decoration is for those who want their homes to be full of life, culture and interesting items for everyone to see. It opposes modern sensibilities and embraces the carefree, the relaxed and the unusual. That said, bohemian-style rooms tend to have certain similarities: they share some of the same characteristics, but no two are completely the same. If you are looking for a style that you can really make yours, then Boho could be for you.
There are no rules when it comes to bohemian decor, but warm, earthy colors are quite common, as are metallic ones. You will want to think of brown, terracotta, gold and other colors in that family. Jewel tones such as saturated purple, fiery orange and electric blue often appear in accessories such as wall hangings and art. The key to using color in bohemian decoration is to think about the warm. White has no place in a bohemian room.
Be sure to mix many patterns and do not be afraid to use colors that would not necessarily go together in a conventional way. The layer is placed on the furniture and try to hang tapestries and carpets on the wall.
Bohemian decorative materials
The key to using materials in this room style is to mix and match. Use natural materials such as burlap and sisal and mix them with silk and chenille. The materials should look slightly worn (not damaged, but not shiny and new).
Everything can have fringes, from pillows to curtains or screens.
Bohemian furniture can not be bought in any old store. The bohemian rooms are usually full of furniture collected over time. Second-hand and vintage items are at home in these rooms. The shapes and sizes are not as important as they are in other room styles.
Each piece should be special and tell a story no matter how it looks. No one should be able to enter a bohemian-style room and know where you got the furniture.
With all that said, the most common type of furniture you'll find in bohemian rooms is Victorian in nature. It is not delicate, but it is the kind of furniture that could be involved while examining the works of literary masters. Think of sunbeds and sofas in saturated colors with dark carved wooden frames.
Accessories in bohemian rooms should tell the story of the people who live there. Ornate boxes, old bottles, maps and crockery that do not match. Bohemians travel, so the items in a bohemian room should look like they have been collected around the world. And keep in mind that just because the bohemian tends to be unconventional does not mean it can not be glamorous. Do not be afraid to use crystal chandeliers and ornate gold mirrors. The only rule is that each element of the room must tell a story.
