When it comes to the house, your room is really important to you. It may not be important to everyone else, but it is important to you, because you are sleeping in your bed. Now the headers for me are the main event in a room, why? Because when you enter the room, the bed is really the first thing you should see. It should not be hidden to the side. It really should be the main event.
You can use a very low profile header, one that is really simple and modern and says, "Hey, I'm not here. Ignore me." Or you can do something integrated and simply take a couple of moldings and frame a pretty headboard. You can paint inside and make it as big as you want. Even in a small room, it can be a beautiful backdrop to place some bedside tables and some lamps on each side.
You can place a great work of art and call it one day and that acts as your header. You can even use cloth. Hang a bar on the top of the wall behind your bed and hang cloth curtains behind it, and then that will act as your headboard. What I love about this is that you can be as creative as you want. You can use works of art. You can use window treatments. You can use moldings to create the header you want.
In addition, painting is the most economical thing you can use. You simply paint a decorative wall. Even painting a small square around where your header would be and then voilà, you have your own homemade header. So don't think that just because you have a small room, you can't go through a large headboard. It will have a great impact and will make the room feel warm and cozy when you go to bed at night.
